Memories

While visiting family in Alabama, three generations of us went to a comic and game store in Huntsville. The five of us split and wandered the store in different directions. I found myself in the Dungeons & Dragons figures corner. This store had a decent selection of unpainted miniatures and an entire aisle of paints both for brush and airbrush.

Wandering the store took me back to my early double digit years. My parents gave me my first D&D books and lead miniatures as a Christmas gift when I was 11. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was four or five years old at this point. AD&D was becoming more widely known and making its first deep penetration into the market. I’m sure part of my dad’s selection process for this gift sprang from my love of science fiction and fantasy and one of my hobbies. I had been building and painting plastic rocket, airplane, car, and dinosaur models for several years and had a decent pallet of Revel model oil paints and brushes.

I remember my dad saying “I don’t know much about this but I think you’ll enjoy it.”

A day or two after Christmas we loaded the car and moved to Southern California where I regularly played D&D for many years.
